Coronavirus: Businesses adapt to new rules, work to mitigate economic impact

When Gov. John Bel Edwards announced his order to limit all restaurants in the state to take-out and delivery, David Puckett — the owner of Breaux Bridge’s Cafe Sydnie Mae — was stunned.

As the owner of a restaurant, which usually have slim profit margins to begin with, Puckett said the governor’s order had “shock value.” If the restaurant had to limit itself to carryout and delivery, a lot of servers would be out of jobs.

“We don’t have unlimited resources,” Puckett said. “But then reality sets in and you have to think…how can we make this positive? How can we turn this into something that is meaningful, human?”

On Monday, the governor announced an order that shuts down all bars and nightclubs, movie theaters, casinos, and gyms or fitness clubs. The order also prevents any gathering of 50 or more people, and prevents restaurants from operating dine-in service.
